Eye-witness Nick Banbury of Harstad reports: "We are used to seeing lots of auroras here in Arctic Norway, but on my way to work this morning I saw something completely unexpected. Between 7:50 and 8:00 a.m. local time, there was a strange light in the sky," shown here in a photo taken by Jan Peter: "It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in colour to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end," continues Banbury. "This spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to the earth. According to the press, this could be seen all over northern norway and must therefore have been very high up in the atmosphere to be seen hundreds of km apart." "[A popular] suggestion at the moment is that it was a rocket shot up by a Russian submarine in the white sea, but the Russians deny this apparently. A big mystery indeed!" Status:  Online Mana:   Posted: Thu Dec 10th, 2009 05:16 am Quote Reply UPDATE: Circumstantial evidence is mounting that the phenomenon was caused by a malfunctioning rocket, possibly an ICBM launched from a Russian submarine. A Navtex no-fly alert was issued for the White Sea on Dec. 9th, and photographers appear to have recorded the initial boost phase of a launch below the spiral (see inset). A rocket motor spinning out of control could indeed explain the spiral pattern, so this explanation seems plausible, although it has not yet been confirmed. Dec 10th, 2009 | View commentsComments Over the skies of Norway, something was happening besides the President’s arrival to pick up his Nobel prize. A truly strange light show took place which absolutely does not look like any permutation of the Northern Lights that I’ve ever seen. It went on for at least ten minutes, twisting in outward moving spirals with some sort of strange blue-green beam coming out of the center. I have to agree with Allahpundit… in terms of “freaky” this may be the “freaky deakyest” to come round in my lifetime. Here is a still shot and a collection of videos taken of the event for you to check out. What could this be? As I said, the Northern Lights seems a very unlikely explanation. Others are saying it was a rocket test by the Russians gone astray. But that’s an awfully neat, circular spiral for an errant missile and it lasted a long time. And where was the rocket? Is it possible that this wasn’t happening in our atmosphere at all, but instead was some sort of supernova type event far out in the universe which simply looked as if it were close by through optical tricks of the atmosphere? You tell me. I certainly don’t have any answers for you. It remains very mysterious though. Is there any way it could be a star or something burning out??
