I found this in wordorigins.org .......

Wordorigins.org

Ghost is of Germanic origin. It dates back to the Old English period and the word gast. The general sense of the word is a spirit or soul and it is used in various specific senses. The earliest attested context is that of the soul of a dead person.

I am not a believer in ghosts. I am very skeptical about them. My major point of contention is that if there are ghosts then with all that have died we would be overflowing with ghosts. Even if ghosts only occur from a violent or extremely highly emotional death we would still have so many ghosts that all the psychics in the would probably get an over load.

After images and emotional state of mind I believe are the most common reasons for sightings.

There are many instances that cameras and other recording devices record things other than what is being recorded at the time. Most of these are actually found to be natural occurrences that are miss interpreted or are visual mirage of what is actually seen. What I mean about a visual mirage is that one will see one thing but because of the point of view that the person is looking from they will see something else and usually it does not look like the original object.

I have been in several so called haunted houses and have never seen an apparition, ghost or anything paranormal. So you see I am very skeptical but change my mind if you can…

A ghost is the apparition of a deceased person, frequently similar in appearance to that person, and usually encountered in places she or he frequented, the place of his or her death, or in association with the person's former belongings. The word ghost may also refer to the spirit or soul of a deceased person, or to any spirit or demon. A place in which ghosts are supposed to appear is described as haunted. A related phenomenon is the poltergeist, literally a 'noisy spirit' that manifests itself by moving and influencing objects, though a widespread view today is that these occurrences are either fraudulent or manifestations of the psychic energy of, particularly, adolescent girls. Phantom armies, ghost-animals, ghost trains and phantom ships have also been reported.

The reality of ghosts is a vexed subject which divides believers and skeptics. The study of ghosts is both the subject of folklore and also, since the nineteenth century, of the investigations of parapsychologists, who have attempted to refine the vocabulary used in describing ghostly phenomena. Summoning or exorcising the shades of the departed is an item of belief and religious practice for spiritualists and practitioners of ritual magic. Though some claims of ghostly phenomena are proven frauds others remain unexplained or are subject to conflicting explanations. So far no one explanation has gained universal acceptance. According to a poll conducted in 2005 by the Gallup Organization about 32% of Americans believe in the existence of ghosts. Their ubiquity is attested to by their apparition even in the unlikely area of Mathematics, when Bishop Berkeley sought to exorcise the Ghosts of departed quantities of Isaac Newton's new science.

Here we go. According to my Websters, a ghost ia the spirit of a dead person believed to appear to or haunt  living persons; a spirit; a ghostwriter.

I don't think every person comes back as a ghost. I believe that people who died suddenly or unexpectedly, and still had unfinished business here, or have just never went on over to the other side, can take the form of a ghost. We do have spirits around us all the time. They are everywhere, but we cannot see them.
